Housing officers’ jobs are usually a part of housing associations or within the local council and involve supervising the management of properties and their tenants. The work is very varied and although most of your time will be spent in the office there will be a need to go out and visit tenants and other housing stakeholders.
Job specifics will vary but a typical day may include allocating housing to those on a waiting list, providing information to tenants either in person or via telephone regarding issues with their housing or rent and at times dealing with anti-social behaviours and squatters. Therefore your work will see you working with the police and other enforcement agencies to ensure the rules of occupancy are enforced fairly and compassionately.
You may also be required to carry out inspections of property to assess damage or maintenance that needs to be carried out, and so your work will involve you working with an extremely diverse group of people from tenants to professionals.
