Architectural Liaison Officers (sometimes referred to as ALOs) offer advice on the way buildings and community areas should be designed in order to minimise the opportunities for crime. Their advice can lead to a site being awarded the respected "Secured By Design" award.

You will not be expected to be an expert on all aspects of the construction industry, as the role of the architectural liaison officer is just to offer impartial advice to a wide variety of industry professionals such as planners, developers and builders.

Minimising crime through the design of modern community spaces is a relatively modern concept but is seen as a key part of building local areas. Naturally ALOs are highly valued individuals and experience gained working within the police would be highly beneficial to such a role because you will have knowledge of what makes an area more prone to crime in terms of building design and location.
